How do I start to learn programming and eventually land my first job?

I am a 21-year-old adult with just the basic understanding of programming; however, I am fascinated by the applications modern computer programs have reached. I would like to hear any tips anyone might have on how I can steadily climb up the programming ladder in order to eventually land a full-time job.
