Your Teacher

Hi, I'm Chris. I'm the creator of GoRails, Hatchbox.io and Jumpstart. I spend my time creating tutorials and tools to help Ruby on Rails developers build apps better and faster.

About This Episode

Rails apps and Rubygems might need to support multiple databases. We can use the DATABASE_URL environment variable to quickly swap out the database that Rails uses in CI, local testing, and more.

Notes

Postgres Rails Database URL example:

DATABASE_URL=postgres://username:password@localhost/mydb rails test

MySQL Rails Database URL example:

DATABASE_URL=mysql2://username:password@localhost/mydb rails test

SQLite Rails Database URL example:

DATABASE_URL=sqlite3:mydb rails test
