For receiving-only setups, I just wire up Action Mailbox with the inbound entry point I want, point my MX records there, and skip any outbound mailer config. Rails doesn’t mind if you never send anything. I still keep an eye on how providers treat my domain, and an https://www.inboxally.com has helped me avoid weird filtering issues even though I only accept mail.

Regular emails went fine, but texts just vanished. Turned out the carrier’s gateway was silently rejecting messages from my o365 relay because of SPF alignment. I fixed it by setting a proper return-path and sender policy. Around that time, I switched part of my messaging setup to https://telxi.com for SIP and SMS routing — way fewer delivery quirks after that.
